STSV - About STSV Club

Indoor Volleyball

During the indoor season (Sept - June) we practice on Tuesday mornings at Our Lady of Good Council Church Gym in Endicott, NY. We play from about 9:30 to Noon and the cost is only $2/person. Lockers and shower facilities are available. Afterward, we usually stop somewhere nearby for a beer and sandwich.

In addition to regular practice sessions we compete ocassionally in organized volleyball tournaments - some charity events and usually at Senior Games events held by some counties in New York State, eg., Chemung and Broome. Contact us if you know of any others. We sometimes enter more than one team - and usually compete very successfully .

NY State Senior Games - are held in June, annually, in Cortland. Our team(s) have performed very well in the state games for the past several years. Teams from Rochester, Syracuse and N. Tonawanda usually also compete. In even-numbered years the state games serve as the qualifier for the National Senior Olympic Games. To qualify a team must finish 1st or 2nd in their age group (50+, 55+,...).

National Senior Olympic Games - are held bi-annually, in odd-numbered years, at different sites in the USA. As winners of the NY State Senior Games in 1998, we qualified for, and competed in, the 1999  National Senior Olympic Games held at Disney World in Orlando, FL on Oct 26-29, 1999. As winners of the NY State Senior Games in 1996, we qualified for, and competed in, the 1997  National Senior Olympic Games held in Tucson, AZ. on May 21-28, 1997.

League Play - A sub-group of 6-8 of us also play in two Heritage CC 'B' Leagues: the Fall 4's and Winter/Spring 6's. Another sub-group plays in the 6's 'C' league.

Outdoor/Sand Volleyball

During the outdoor season, from June thru August, a group of 8-10 of us play on the sand courts at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton on Tuesday mornings from 9-11:30. We usually get enough players to play 3's or 4's. We've been playing "sand ball" now for about four years but, as yet, we're not quite ready for the AVP.

If so many club members didn't also participate in golf, softball and tennis, we would probably get a bigger turn-out for this fun, but physically challenging, activity. Occasionally we get "guest appearances" from one of the out-of-town seniors volleyball club players. If you want to join us just wear beach clothes and a hat, and bring water, sun glasses, sun-screen, and a towel (to wash-off after playing).

Other Activities

In addition to playing, many of our members participate in promoting the sport of volleyball. Several members are certified High School Girls Volleyball Officials; others also officiate in various local leagues. In past years we have helped organize and run, as well as played in (and won once!), the Crime Victims Assistance Center's benefit volleyball tournament. Similarly, some volunteer at the annual Spiedie Fest Sand Volleyball Tournament, which benefits Catholic Charities, etal. We will help organize and run the volleyball events in the Broome Co. Senior Games.

Softball - Several of our members participate in the popular Seniors Softball Leagues as well as the various county and state Senior Games events. For the past couple of years we've held a fun volleyball tournament for the "softballers". Last year tournament consisted of nine teams from the neighboring cities (eg., Cortland, Elmira, Ithaca, Owego, etc.).

Golf - Several of our members are also golfers; some avid (and good!). In addition to leagues and regular matches, and they also participate in the county and state Senior Games events.
